David Gemmell - a true legend

I had initially intended a very different opening post to this blog, but life seems to have a strange way of altering even the best-laid plans. So it is with great sadness I find myself instead opening this blog with a written tribute to the late David Gemmell (see picture to the left), the renowned British fantasy author who sadly died yesterday (Friday 28th July).

It is to what will be my eternal regret that I never had the chance to meet David, but from what I have heard from other fans of his, he was by all acounts a witty, kind and thoroughly decent man, whose personal courage and moral code always shone through into his work. Indeed, it was his personal beliefs that really gave an edge to his novels and subsequently his work is littered with themes of heroism, courage and the importance of self-belief. David created such wonderful stories, and such beautifully flawed characters. His works are not only hugely enjoyable to read, but are also vastly inspiring. The very fact that he wrote Legend while being tested for cancer is just one example of his personal strength and courage.

He was one of the best storytellers that the UK has ever produced, and leaves a void that might never be filled. My thoughts are with his wife and children, and personally I will drink a quiet toast to a man who has touched the lives of so many.

Rest in Peace, David.
